There’s yet another good reason to head to the Hotel @ The Lafayette for lunch these days. Mike A @ The Lafayette is now open Wednesday through Friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and not only offers one of the nicest atmospheric daytime dining experiences in the city, it also offers some darn good food. Aside from the food, the restaurant is promoting that “The Bar is Open for your version of the Three Martini Lunch”… ouch!
Owner/Chef Mike Andrzejewski’s recipe for success this time is the introduction of a stripped down lunch menu that plays off of famous lunch offerings from around the world. For example, the Cobb Salad (The Brown Derby, Los Angeles) and the French Dip (Phillipe, The Original, L.A.) are both featured on the menu, with reference to the places that made the items great. Mike’s promoting it as a menu that “Features Classic Midday Meals from Famed American Restaurants”. That means that you no longer have to travel to Perry’s Restaurant in Milford, CT. for a quality lobster roll.
While the menu is obviously quite meat heavy (what else would you expect from a steak house), there were a couple of offerings that I could try out, including the lobster roll (photo), which was much better than I expected considering I’ve only tried a lobster roll once in my life and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. This time there were no complaints! I was happy to find that the side of pickles and chips were made in-house… a very nice touch.
The custom variation of the three martini lunch (talk about a throwback to another era where this was not so unusual), is designed around serving up crafted cocktails, fine wines and a “diverse beverage selections through the day”. We know where that can lead to… happy hour at 2pm anyone? I’m sure that there are still some folks out there who are wondering what ever happened to the days when the martini lunch was common place. Well, here’s your chance to reminisce over a stylized side car.
It’s nice to see Mike A expanding his hours at the steak house. Hopefully one of these days, once the lunch business is in full swing, we might even see some weekend lunch hours. I’m sure that it’s only a matter of time.
