Over the past few years Flurrious! has established itself as a fun-filled, fast paced, family-friendly winter festival. This year will be no different, as the festival continues to attract hundreds upon hundreds of participants, who come to Delaware Park to battle it out against others on fields covered with snow.
On January 26, starting at 9am and lasting until 8pm, you are invited to come to the Parkside Lodge, where you will find yourself instantly a part of the action. Per usual, the day kicks of with a running race around Ring Road (this year the race is called Ice Man Run). Not long after runners have returned from their trek, the beer begins to flow and the musicians take to the stage, starting with an acoustic set from Sara Elizabeth Genco. From there DJ Cutler will get the giant heated beer tent hopping, and then special guest Terry Sullivan (Low Lamp Sessions) goes on at 2pm. Then get ready for guitar hero Mike DiSanto as he delivers a two-hour set of acoustic soul. From 6pm-8pm Dan Harper and the Magic Show will take the stage in order to wind up, and then wind down the crowd – it’s the final hurrah.
While the live music is underway, festival-goers can check out the all-day Hockey Expo and Free Skate run by Buffalo Pond Hockey (see here). Or play Snow Beach Tennis when inspiration strikes. Competitions abound in the form of a kickball tournament (Game On! Sports) and a broomball tournament (interested team captains send email here for more info – team sizes between ten and 15 players). There will be a Fun Bike Ride around Ring Road sponsored by Campus Wheelworks, a visit by Buffalo Nordic X-Country Ski Club, demonstrations by Great Lakes Kitefliers Society, igloo building, Kan Jam, Tug of War competitions, sleigh rides… and of course the annual quidditch Snow Belt Invitational; a tournament that will attract over three hundred competitors to Buffalo from all over the North Eastern United States.
This year Flurrious! also welcomes The Kissing Museum, the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Snowman Making Challenge, hand hewn Midway Arcade Games, indoor children’s activities including winter science workshops such as compass building, kids’ snowshoe making, Inuit sunglasses demos, dry ice experiments, etc.
There will be plenty of beer and wine on-hand, with plenty of hot food in the Parkside Lodge by the fireplace, and outdoors with kettle corn, a cookout, and chili, stews and brews!
