Over the holidays we will be highlighting a number of members of Buffalo Society of Artists (BSA), so that you might support them by purchasing original works of art.
Thanks to Paul Rybarczyk at BSA for helping me put these together. Visit the BSA website to learn more about the institution – one of the oldest continually operating arts organizations in the country. Next up on our list is artist Dianne Baker:
Dianne Baker has been exhibiting since l979 locally in galleries including Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Castellani Art Museum, Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Art Dialogue Gallery, and Canisius College. Nationally, she has exhibited in New York City, Washington, D. C., Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Denver, and Santa Fe. Internationally, she has exhibited in Hamilton, Ontario and Bratislava, Slovak Republic… from the artist:
I see treasure in debris and transform the forgotten, discarded, and mundane into totemic sculpture and assemblages (3 dimensional collages).
Thus, by portraying to the viewer this “second life” of recycled materials and found objects, they may be motivated to save our environment from global consumerism.
My art engages the viewer in looking, lingering, and responding. Although I use various methods of fiber manipulations that have historical origins relating to many ancient cultures, I never wanted to produce traditional tapestry.
I love exploring change and growth – things that look one way and turn into something else.
By manipulating the interplay of texture, color, line and shape, I find the final assembly contains a dialogue, which goes beyond its origin. From my eclectic accumulation of materials and objects, I imbue some with humor, nostalgia, joy, or unexpected weight, thus revealing old/new, quiet/unquiet, and soft/hard. In juxtaposing these incongruous assemblages, I am looking beyond the outer form for the suggestion of an inner meaning; to capture the magic in the “ordinary”.
I welcome visitors to her studio by appointment in order to see a variety of one of a kind pieces. For further information, view my web site: www.dbakerartist.com
