Leather & Lace
by: Kara Weymouth
If the lace and leather trend dominating the spring 2013 runways is
any indication, designers are channeling Anastasia Steele!
But while 50 Shades may have re-ignited an interest in certain
fetishes, they can actually be traced back to the sexually repressed
Victorian era. Perhaps, with all of the recent talk of defunding
Planned Parenthood and overturning Roe v. Wade, designers are
revisiting a sexually repressed time to remind women how far we’ve
come…and how much we have to lose.
Jason Wu danced a seductive line between feminine silhouettes and a
masculine sexuality with lace bra tops, leather stovepipe pants, and a
backless apron dress adorned with flowers. Wu cited Helmut Newton as
his inspiration and between the red lips, leather harnesses, and
overall androgyny; it was a little heavy-handed but mostly worked.
While the provocative is new territory for Jason, Dominic Louis
regularly embraces the darker side with his unisex collections. This
time around, his high necks echoed collars and gave fleeting glimpses
of skin beneath exotic, black leathers. If you’re more the glamorous
dominatrix, Sung Yee’s collection of leather pants and crop tops are
perfect for the red carpet. The leather jacket will always be classic,
but this season it comes in so many incarnations (shrunken, glossy,
studded, colored, quilted, and sleeveless) that you can wear it to the
PTA meeting or drinks at the latest hot spot.
Leather may bring naughty fantasies to mind, but lace, which means to
ensnare and entice in Latin, will slowly seduce. Its hard to say
exactly when black lace went from classic, Spanish mantillas on
weeping widows to something more subversive but nowadays it is more
frequently associated with lingerie. Since the days of Queen Elizabeth
the First’s stiff necks lace has had many incarnations from scalloped
paper German styles in the 1930s, to the crotchet styles favored by
hippies in the sixties, and the stretchy, neon colored favored by
Madonna and her wannabes in the 80s, today lace is even ripped and
dyed to suit the current zombie/monster trend infiltrating the
streets!
With her signature wink, Anna Sui managed to make lace look youthful
and fresh while Venexianna used it more traditionally for evening
cocktail dresses. Unlike virginal white, black lace is guaranteed to
look sophisticated and just a bit mysterious.
