Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School: Dames, Drinks & Drawing

There’s art school… then there’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School, an art school that seconds (or firsts) as an alternative  drawing movement. It’s as if someone took a not so motionless snapshot of live burlesque and then allowed the audience to capture the moment on paper with pen and ink. Actually, that’s exactly what it is. And instead of a classroom on campus, the “classrooms” for Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School are held in theatrical pubs. In theory, the somewhat stationary performers don outrageous, sexy, bawdy, avant garde costumes, and the audience enjoys an interactive artistic session like no other.
Local artists and performers, Tara Sasiadek and Cat McCarthy, are bringing Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School to Buffalo for the first time. The movement was started by artist Molly Crabapple in NYC and now has hundreds of chapters around the world. The upcoming show in Buffalo is being billed as “Completely Inappropriate – a combination burlesque-performance and life-drawing session, with a relaxed bar atmosphere and Thanksgiving themed hijinks.”
On that night, sketch artists in the crowd are expected to portray the models as they explore the meaning behind Thanksgiving while wearing “a paper-mache cornucopia”. Cat and Tara expect that there will be a wide range of artists in the audience, since all skill levels are welcome to participate. A ticket for the event includes a drink from the bar, paper and crayons/pencils, and an entertaining romp with an imaginative cast of characters.
