Over the holidays we will be highlighting a number of members of Buffalo Society of Artists (BSA), so that you might support them by purchasing original works of art. Thanks to Paul Rybarczyk at BSA for helping me put these together. Visit the BSA website to learn more about the institution – one of the oldest continually operating arts organizations in the country. Next up on our list is artist Paul Alico:
BSA artist Paul Alico works in pastel, oil, and acrylic. A Buffalo native with a degree in Art Education from the State University College at Buffalo, he has been a practicing artist for the past 40 years. His subjects include portraits, figures, and a variety of cityscapes and landscapes. Initially he began as a wildlife artist, specializing in waterfowl, and was a top 60 contender for the Federal Duck Stamp. Having been a Lieutenant with the Buffalo Fire Department for 20 years–retiring in 1989–he also created a great deal of firefighting related artwork. His artwork was used a cover art of Size Up magazine, a official publication of the NY State Association of Fire Chiefs.
As a wildlife artist, his work was seen in many galleries specializing in wildlife and sporting art, including G & R Gallery of Wildlife (he had his own display room for several years at this location), the prestigious Easton Waterfowl Festival, Clayton Wildlife Show, Annapolis Marine Art Gallery, Russell Fink Gallery, Florida’s Decoy Den, and Marco Island’s Mangroves Gallery. He has won numerous awards at local outdoor shows, and has had national and international sales of several firefighting prints. Paul is a past winner of the Western New York Artist of the Year Award.
Paul and his wife split their time between the Buffalo area and, during the winter, the south. For the past six years, he has been doing en plein aire (working in the open air) street scenes, as well as outdoor wedding ceremonies, in historic Savannah, Georgia. When in Buffalo he attends weekly open figure classes at the Hamburg Centennial Art Center, and open portrait classes at the East Aurora Portrait Group (open meaning “no instruction”). This winter he plans on doing plein aire work in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah.
Paul was featured in an article about plein aire artists working in Savannah in South Magazine (see slide show). He has made many donations of artwork to the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Niagara Frontier Art Association, and other charitable fundraisers. One of his works was recently acquired by Roswell Park Institute for their permanent collection. HIs present gallery representation is by local galleries Kathi Eagan Fine Art, Meibohm Fine Art, Vern Stein Fine Art, and the Grand Bohemian Gallery, Savannah, Georgia.
Currently Paul has a solo exhibit at Savarino Properties, at 26 Mississippi Street, in the Cobblestone District.
For any further information, feel free to contact Paul by email (paul.alico@gmail.com) or phone at 716-648-0298.
