Buffalo Beer Week is upon us. That means that beer-lovers all over Buffalo are getting pumped to try out some of their favorite brews, while exploring some of the more obscure beers that are being promoted by breweries, bars, events and brewers.
From today’s Plenary Session – Buffalo Beer Hall of Fame Luncheon at Cole’s to tomorrow’s Micros at Marcy Beer Festival, there are plenty of places to go and try the best beers around, brewed locally and not-so-locally. Willard Brooks of Gene McCarthy’s and chair of Buffalo Beer Week, states “The idea to have a Buffalo Beer Week like the original one in Philadelphia was Dan Syracuse’s of the Pizza Plant who teamed up a few years ago with Mike Shatzel of Blue Monk and Bill Metzger of the Great Lakes Brewing News. At that time I was still living in San Francisco which also has a pretty nice Beer Week. There is a palpable sense that the craft beer revolution is about to land in a big way in Buffalo. We have an impressive history in brewing. The significance of Buffalo Beer Week is to make more people aware of our heritage and to take advantage of the economic and social opportunity that this represents for the city. Buffalo Beer Week promotes Buffalo’s growing craft beer culture by sponsoring a ten-day festival in Erie and Niagara counties that attracts beer tourism, fosters knowledge of our regional brewing heritage, and serves as a showcase for Buffalo’s breweries, restaurants, pubs, and other businesses with ties to the craft beer community. It’s about beer and food, history, economic development, homebrewing, agriculture (hops and malt), and turning Buffalo into the rich network of beer-loving places that become the social glue. Beer is a prism for all that is right about this city — it’s why I love it and why I moved back here after 20 years on the west coast.”
