Season after season after season, LACE is a big feature and/or trend on the fashion runways of the world’s fashion capitals. And it’s always beautifully done and a welcomed sight. Lace is timeless. But, first as ever, a brief history lesson. LACE is an openwork fabric, patterned with open holes in the work, made by machine or by hand. The holes can be formed via removal of threads or cloth from a previous woven fabric, but more often, open spaces are created as part of the lace fabrics. True lace was not made until the late 15th and early 16th centuries. A true lace is created when a thread is looped, twisted or braided to other threads independently from a backing fabric. Originally linen, silk, gold or silver threads were used; but now lace is often made with cotton thread, although manufactured lace may be made of synthetic fiber.

There are several types of lace, classified by how they are made, including NEEDLE LACE (using a needle and thread), CUTWORK or WHITEWORK (lace constructed by removing threads from a woven background, with the remaining threads wrapped or filled with embroidery), BOBBIN LACE (made with bobbins and a pillow, example, CHANTILLY LACE), TAPE LACE (makes into tape as the lace as it is worked, or used a machine- or hand-made textile strip formed into a design, which then joined and embellished with a needle or bobbin lace), KNOTTED LACE (including MACRAMÉ andTATTING, made with a shuttle or a tatting needle), CROCHETED LACE, KNITTED LACE (including SHETLAND LACE, a lace so fine that it can be pulled through as wedding ring), and CHEMICAL LACE (where the stitching area is stitched with embroidery threads that form a continuous motif.

White lace generally rules in the summer season, while black lace–some red, and new colors every fall/winter season–in lace party dresses is the height of sophistication for the holiday party season. Once only reserved for the “blushing” bride on her wedding day, white lace has become a staple of every woman’s and young girls’ wardrobe, covering the gamut from innocent as a lamb, Steel Magnolias dresses and baby doll dresses to “va-va-voom, I’m too sexy for this room” body-conscious designs. It can be understatedly plain or gloriously detailed, girlishly casual, richly embroidered, utilized as an overlay on a colored fabric, or just the right accent to a floral piece. In addition, paired with denim or leather, lace will give you that tough-yet-tender look. The runways of the New York Spring Fashion Week Shows gave us all of that and a lot more.

ANNA SUI, BEBE AND BETSEY JOHNSON all showed some of the most subversively sexy yet somewhat “pure” lace dresses and jackets (in white, cream or ivory) last February. They were simply a joyous celebration of life and summer. BEBE also had some of the most beautiful lace-inspired and -adorned accessories, especially the booties and wedge heel shoes, and the killer tote-size bags carried by the models. CHARLOTTE RONSON had the cutest lace separates (rompers, tops and cigarette pants/leggings), and DOUGLAS HANNANT’s PINK COLLECTION has lovely tiered lace dresses and delicate lace shorts that had the right mix of youthful vibe and grownup sophistication. A white lace dress paired with a mint green pair of ladies-who-lunch pumps, as seen in RAF SIMONS‘ last JIL SANDER span> collection is the height of understated elegance, and just another way of extending and mixing-and-matching the pieces in your wardrobe. ERIN BY ERIN FETHERSTON‘s cream lace shirtdress and paneled lace shirt were also highlights of the season. MARA HOFFMAN, NANETTE LEPORE and TADASHI SHOJI added striking and distinctive color to the mix, which has been continued into the Fall/Winter 2012 collections, as seen in the big September fashion books.

And it’s not just at the high end of fashion. At every price level, lace is eternal. At MAGGY LONDON (www.maggylondon.com), the fall collection includes an exquisite mesh and lace evening dress in alluring nude and black tiers. The added ruched detailing helps to create a forgiving silhouette that women will appreciate. The style fits perfectly into the 20s era trends that are now recurring; and is quite affordable to boot. It’s a dress you will wear to holiday parties, weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs…

LESTER’S, an iconic retail institution in the New York Metro area for over 60 years and a strong presence in e-commerce (www.lesters.com), has many lace pieces that are fall 2012 party-ready and affordably priced. DV BY DOLCE VITA NOELY LACE DRESS, ($132) and FREE PEOPLE’s LACE MEDALLION SLIP DRESS ($88) are just a couple examples of the wide range of styles and brands they carry; and how well they stay on top of the trends.
Other examples of fall 2012 lace includes the lace dress from BCBGMAXAZRIA ($268), the metallic lace dress from SHOSHANNA ($395, at select Neiman Marcus stores), HONOR‘s silk organza/lace dress ($3,900, at Honor NYC), and JEN KAO‘s silk charmeuse and dress ($1,360), all evident from the big fall fashion books which reinforces the tale: Lace is eternal.
