This morning I received an email from a BRO reader who pointed me to an article in the Toronto Sun. The article brought up an interesting idea that revolves around a joint Toronto-US city bid for the Olympics in 2024. Toronto councillor James Pasternak pointed out that, “”Geographically Buffalo and Toronto are pretty close. Detroit and Chicago would be other options as well.” The reason that Pasternak is even pondering the thought of a joint bid is due to the lack of visitors to Olympic cities in the past – a problem that is known to leave the host cities with “financial hangovers”.
I’m sure that many Buffalonians would be jaded regarding the possibility of Toronto-Buffalo hosting the Olympics. While it may be a far, far stretch, the Toronto Sun article does come up with some interesting points, and while it does not mention Niagara Falls as one of the factors, I’m sure that having one of the ‘natural wonders of the world’ in such close proximity would be an important draw to get visitors here. How long does it take to get high speed rail from Buffalo to Toronto?
