Buffalo is full of surprises. Did you ever hear the rumor that somewhere in town sat the original dance floor that was used in the movie ‘Saturday Night Fever’? Sounds bizarre doesn’t it? Well, the rumor is “kinda true,” it turns out. The story goes that one of the dance floors (not the one used in the film)has been sitting for 30 years in a barn in Eden, NY. That dance floor is finally being reassembled and is going to be lit up this Thursday night! Guests attending a celebration at The Albright-Knox will actually be able to dance on the original Saturday Night Fever floor… talk about a great facebook profile photo.
Is it a mere coincidence that Buffalo is also home to the World’s Largest Disco? I think not!
The dance floor was made by a company in Buffalo called Litelab (still around today), which was commissioned to build the floor. After the movie was made, this particular floor made its way back to Buffalo where it was disassembled and virtually forgotten about. Until now.
This Thursday night, the Albright-Knox is hosting a 70s theme party called ‘Collision’ that coincides with the final days of the gallery’s current exhibit: Wish You Were Here: The Buffalo Avant-garde in the 1970s. It’s being touted as a massive summer celebration, with Rich Products donating $30,000 in 70s style foods “…like quiches, Swedish meatballs, duck a l’orange, mac and cheese AND Pop Rocks Truffles.”
Here’s another bit of groovy trivia for you… In the 90s, for a four year period, Rich Products made… POP ROCKS!
The party and the exhibit pay tribute to the 150 anniversary of the gallery, hence the name of the exhibit: Wish You Were Here: The Buffalo Avant-garde in the 1970s.
Presenting sponsors are Rich Products and First Niagara
Tickets to this fundraising celebration are $150 each.
