By Michelle Gigante – Director Shakti Yoga:
It seems that now-a-days art is created on the basis of earning potential. Musicians are preoccupied with how many youtube hits they may get, theatre producer are concerned with choosing plays that will sell the most seats and artists create with someone’s living room decoration in mind.
What happened to art for art sake: art as a simple offering of expression that comes from someone’s soul, subconscious or heart? Just like the yoga practice art is a way of releasing what is deep within and then offered up.
Shakti Lounge provides a venue for the artist to freely express without concern of popularity or revenue. Shakti Lounge is a series of live music events in salon-style atmosphere. We provide the artist a forum with an appreciative audience and the audience with a relaxed setting for a fresh look at new art.
This Saturday is no exception. As a dancer I will present a new piece that comes from a deep place within me. Large canvas painter Phil Durgan and singer-songwriter Alex Gavin will do the same. This live art event entitled BIG BOLD BEAUTY will be a night of free expression where the concern is on how true the artists’ form can be. Durgan will manifest a new piece on canvas with acrylic while Gavin presents personal songs of topical nature. I intend to present through dance, what might be called “moving poetry”.
In the past Shakti Lounge has hosted some of our high caliber local talent such as Mir Ali, Sitar Jam and BPO violinist Amy Glidden. They all have reveled in presenting new pieces with an edge of intensity that might not have been offered elsewhere. It has truly been a joy to curate this series.
BIG BOLD BEAUTY a live art event is this Saturday April 21 2012 at 8pm. For future concerts that take place in Shakti Yoga’s temple of a building, please check our website at www.shaktibuffalo.com.
