Where are you from originally?
Buffalo
What is your medium?
Predominantly collage, with some assemblage, decollage and photomontage
How has Buffalo influenced your work?
Born and bred in Buffalo from a working class background, I know how important and sensible it is to re-use, to recycle. I believe this is one reason why I find the art of collage gratifying, sensible and ‘fun’.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Name an artist (or more) that most inspires you?
Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, 19th century Japanese printmakers, Charles Burchfield, too many to mention!
What is your preferred subject matter?
Nature and dreams
How do you feel you can best advance to the next level, or are you most happy where you are now?
You should never be happy with where you are. The next level is probably abstract expressionist painting and more decollage.
What is another medium that you would like to learn? Or that you have already learned?
I’d like to explore the different facets of painting.
Is there a purpose to your artwork?
It’s good therapy!
How often do you work on your art?
Depends on the season. During the winter, almost daily. Once spring hits, there are house and yard projects to attend to….
What or who first prompted you to venture into the art world?
My partner Scott.
^ Daniel’s earlier works
Have you been schooled in art? Are you planning on attending art school? If so, where?
I’ve been going to the downtown library for over 40 years. They have an amazing collection of art books, and I’ve been studying them for the last ten years. Visiting local galleries is also a great way to discover inspiration and technique.
Where is your favorite venue in Buffalo to exhibit?
464 Gallery – it’s an interesting space with a long history. It’s been re-used and re-furbished…and Marcus has great openings!
Where is your current/next show in the city? Dates? Opening night?
I have a show opening this Friday night (4/13) at 464. 6pm-10pm.
What is the title and theme of the show/s?
Brick Works, Small Works and Other Oddities. Brick Works is a series of collage on century-old firebricks.
What’s the best thing about being an artist?
I think the best thing about being an artist is seeing how you can push yourself and how you can learn from your mistakes and finding out just how much you actually can do. Oh, and it’s fun!
