South Buffalo’s Patrick Kane just bought a 6,000 square feet, 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath mansion on Old Lakeshore Road in Hamburg. The price? A cool $2.68 million.
Kane, of course, plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. Over his career, he’s earned more than $30 million while scoring 123 goals in 395 games. So paying a few million for a house isn’t going to be a financial burden.
This is either the most expensive or second most expensive house purchase in Erie County ever, depending on your perspective. Michael Wilson, a 21 year old hedge fund operator from Cleveland, purchased two neighboring Hamburg homes in 2008 for a combined $6.3M ($3.3M for one house and $3.0M for the other). Those two homes were a combined 30,000 square feet and were purchased by Wilson from the heir to the Sorrento cheese fortune.
Within a year, Wilson defaulted on the financing – John Russo, the Sorrento heir, financed the sale of the homes to Wilson – and the properties were foreclosed. So, if you count a property ‘sale’ that was unwound within a year, Kane’s purchase is the second largest residential real estate transaction ever. If not, this is the new biggest deal.
Patrick Kane has developed a party boy history. He was arrested after allegedly assaulting a Buffalo cab driver. Ultimately, Kane apologized for the incident, plead guilty to disorderly conduct and the matter was resolved.
The Hamburg residence will be quite a change of pace for Kane, who last year lived in Carl Paladino’s waterfront development – The Pasquale at Waterfront Place. But Kane will have a lot more room to spread out at his new Hamburg crib as it sits on over 2.5 acres. And the neighbors will be much further away (which may be a good thing).
Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered how bad Zillow’s ‘zestimates’ are, this is a good case study. Kane bought the house for $2.68 million. The Zillow.com zestimate is. . . wait for it. . . just over $900,000. Just a little off from the actual sale price.
