There are sports bars and then there are sports bars dedicated to fútbol.
Right now, the closest thing that Buffalo has to a serious pub dedicated to soccer? I don’t think that there is one. Yes, there are bars that get into the games when the World Cup is in action, but other than that there’s really not much going on. If you’re a fan of watching serious fútbol, all the time, then you’ll be happy to hear that there is a pub opening that is designed for you.
It’s being called Més Que which means ‘more than’, which is part of the motto of FC Barcelona – “More than a club”. There’s already a pretty big buzz going around the soccer community, which may not be the biggest sports community in Buffalo, though the solid base of fans are ardent supporters and should provide a good customer base for the pub. Which leads me to wonder why Americans as a whole are not more enthusiastic about the sport. In Buffalo, I think it’s primarily because we don’t have a professional team. Soccer Lens has some interesting points that contribute to a number of theories explaining the overall lack of passion for a game that is ruled by Argentina, Spain, Brazil, etc.
That doesn’t mean that a lot of Americans love the sport… it just will never be as popular as basketball or football. For those of you out there who are familiar with FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, EUFA, UEFA Euro 2012… and closer to home the Bedlington Terriers FC, Sam’s Army®, American Outlaws and FC Buffalo, there is another type of club coming to Buffalo and it’s one that will take the Greater Buffalo soccer/fútbol community by storm.
