Buffalo’s grain elevators/silos are one step closer to being lit up. What has been a dream for many, is being seriously considered by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC). At a recent board meeting it was agreed to assign Foit Albert as the company that will take the lead on the initiative. Foit Albert is being tasked to draft a pilot project that would see the elevators and bridges lit up along the Buffalo River.
Initial team members include Ambiances Design Productions (see work here), a company that made the Guinness Record when it assisted in the largest projection with The Image Mill, Quebec, Canada (see description and video below). Aurora Borealis (lead photo) was an exclusive design. At this point there is no way to tell what sort of lighting element will be the preferred concept direction – I can only assume that there are financial restrictions, so don’t expect to see anything like The Image Mill. Regardless, the ECHDC has already made some sort of a commitment towards doing something that should be spectacular, considering its newest project team member. You may recall that the Quebec elevators were featured on BRO back in 2008?
Following is a description and video of the Quebec 400th Anniversary (The Image Mill) using ‘Christie’ projectors:
Each evening at 10pm, E/T/C Paris will transform the Port of Quebec’s 81 monumental Bunge company grain elevators in the Old Port into an immense projection screen – the ultimate in widescreen viewing. The Image Mill will be visible from many vantage points, including across the St. Lawrence River.
To accomplish the feat, E/T/C Paris has installed 27 Christie Roadster S+20K DLP® projectors to create a continuous image measuring 657m (2/3 km) long by 33m (108 feet) high. E/T/C’s Onlyview®, a multimedia control platform, will operate the programming, transmission and broadcasting of more than 400 images, animations and videos in the 40-minute show, as well as handle the synchronization of the soundtrack which will be simulcast on local radio station 88.3 (CKIA-FM) or 100.1.
