Painting for Preservation (P4P)’s most recent Art-In at Lyth Cottage, a Preservation Ready Sites (FB) location, attracted artists, residents, and intentioned observers to the Hamlin Park neighborhood on Buffalo’s East Side. The historic home, ca.1886, was recently purchased as part of the City of Buffalo Homestead Program by a young East Aurora resident eager to add Lyth Cottage to the growing efforts to revitalize the neighborhood. There is currently a community-led push to nominate the home to the National Register of Historic Places along with the entire Hamlin Park Local Historic District. While artists worked, they had the opportunity to speak with the owner as he waited to meet with the masons and to hear many of the residents’ stories about the house and the community.
P4P will create new artwork at I Heart Central Terminal, the kick-off event for Buffalo Unscripted filming. I Heart Central Terminal starts at 9:30 am at Central Terminal on Paderewski Drive on Saturday, July 16. There’s quite a few cool things going on and art making is one of them. Artists of all media and skill level are welcome – architects, painters, photographers, videographers – or come by to observe artists’ take on the iconic Terminal. Exterior and interior concourse locations will be accessible to artists. Bring your own supplies and/or participate in our first community art project. See Buffalo Unscripted for other scheduled activities.
Buffalo Unscripted is a grassroots documentary sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation filming in Buffalo, July 16-23. All Buffalonians are invited to participate by answering questions like, “Describe Buffalo in one word,” “What’s your favorite building in your neighborhood?” The film will premier during the National Preservation Conference in October.
