In keeping with the ‘art funding’ theme, it seems appropriate to showcase a local photographer in today’s holiday gift-giving post. During the day you can find Michael inside his gallery at the historic Market Arcade, selling his Buffalo-centric photos and books. It’s a small gallery, but between the photos, the two books and all of the Buffalo gifts available at the Visitors Center (across the hall), it’s well worth the trip – be sure to stop by the Washington Market for lunch when you go.
As the funding cuts put ‘the hurt’ on our culturals, it’s even more important to go out of your way to support the small artists. “With all the uproar over arts funding,” Michael told me. “It’s sometimes the most obvious that gets overlooked… the small galleries and individual artists need your support. The ones that get no government money, but rely 100% on sales… sales from YOU. The Queen City Gallery has a great selection of Buffalo themed photographs and a couple of books that show not only how much you love your city, but that you are willing to “put your money where your mouth is” supporting artists at the street level. With small prints starting at $20 this is a great gift idea for any budget. And the best part… when you spend you money here, 100% of your money stays in the community – something that the big box retailers can’t say.
