Sam Savarino and Chris Jacobs are capitalizing on the tens of thousands of hockey fans expected to attend the World Junior Hockey Championships starting next month. They are creating banquet and meeting space on the ground floor of 95 Perry Street that will be serving food and beverages during the December 26 through January 5th event.
“One of the concerns was that there were not enough venues for folks to hang out during that time,” said Sam Savarino, President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Companies. “We hope to address that. We will then open the place for parties, events and special arena nights.”
“Chris Jacobs and I are motivated by a desire to provide another arena neighborhood option for those attending the World Junior games as well as those who want to come down and absorb the atmosphere,” he said. “It is going to be called, simply, 95 Perry.”
“Our plans include having the premises be a point of sale for gear/apparel related to the tournament, the countries and the teams. We will have plenty of TVs to follow action and will be serving beer, wine and cocktails as well as some local food favorites such as pizza and beef on weck.”
Longer term, Savarino is seeking restaurant operator for the 5,000 sq.ft. space. A recessed patio fronts Mississippi Street. The improvements now underway will help pave the way for a permanent facility.
The operations will be catered with more than one restaurant/bar. Dennis Brinkworth has been instrumental in getting it set up and will be working the World Juniors and some other events. It will be available for private functions and parties before and after arena events.
“We are considering opening before and after certain arena events as long as we can comply with State Liquor Authority restrictions- lest we be considered an operating premises before we intend to be,” said Savarino. “We also want to be mindful of the quiet enjoyment we owe to our tenants.”
Savarino Cos. and Avalon Development converted the circa 1930’s Benlin Distribution Services warehouse into a mix of office, retail and apartment space. Empire State Development Corporation and Watts Architecture & Engineering P.C. occupy a majority of the office space. There are five loft apartments on the second floor.
Redevelopment plans for 95 Perry and the new banquet space were designed by Silvestri Architects PC.
