This
Sunday, the Historical Society is the place to be for a sampling of Japanese
culture. The third annual Bunka-no-Hi, or Japanese Culture Day, will be held
Sunday, November 1st, from 10AM to 2PM, at the Buffalo and Erie County
Historical Society building.
The
program kicks off with a video of a recent shakuhachi and taiko performance,
both Japanese traditional instruments, followed by a Japanese tea ceremony
demonstration. After an ikebana demonstration, music will be provided by the
Hamburg High School Jazz Band, which has performed in Japan. Dr. Benjamin
Christy of Buffalo State College will perform western and Japanese solos on the
clarinet, and Akiko Baggs will perform a selection of Japanese songs. Rounding
out the program will be a Japanese folk dance performance by Buffalo’s own
Odori no Kai. Before and after the program, and during the intermission, guests
are encouraged to visit the ikebana display in the central court courtesy of
the Buffalo Chapter of Ikebana International, while enjoying some tea and
sweets.
This
event is part of the Japan in Buffalo Niagara project. It is organized by the
Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City Committee, the Friends of the Japanese Garden in
Buffalo, Ikebana International, and the Japanese Group of Buffalo.
Admission
is $10 for families and $5 for individuals.
