I wonder if anyone at the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter prepped this dog for her big Elmwood debut today. Of course they did. They made sure that she had her shots and made sure her coat looked pretty. But did they whisper in her ear that she was embarking on the most important day of her life? I think they did. Each Saturday an Animal Shelter volunteer (normally Stephanie) picks a lucky dog from the lot and throws an ‘Adopt Me’ jacket on him or her. Then, it’s off to Elmwood Avenue… the ultimate catwalk. Talk about pressure!
I’m a big believer that animals have an inner sense as to whether certain things are important or not. If you really know the inner workings of a dog, then you might agree with me that a homeless dog can appreciate a big break. Getting picked to hit the streets in search of that break is only half the battle. The other half is appealing to a potential mom or dad. When I spotted the dog in the photo I ran over to inquire about this new initiative. I also wanted to wish the pup luck in finding a home. “She found one twenty minutes ago,” her coach, Stephanie, told me. “Her new owner has named her Jenny. This is the third Saturday that we have done this – and it’s the third dog that we’ve found a home for… that’s three for three.”
I was so happy to hear that Jenny had found a dad (and a name). It made my day. What an incredible initiative this is. Not only does it help to socialize a dog, it gives the volunteer a chance to socialize as well… a real win-win for everyone involved. I asked Stephanie if this might lead to more volunteers walking more dogs down Buffalo’s commercial districts. She told me that she was in the process of discussing this with other volunteers. If you are interested in helping with this effort, please contact the Animal Shelter and remember to tell them that Jenny sent you. Or call 716-851-4265. Woof!
