From former Buffalo Common Councilmember James Pitts to Brian Meyers of The Buffalo News in regard to the proposed waste of waterfront space, known as Wingate:
“How can you call a hotel horrific and it ain’t even open yet?”
Well, easily, Mr. Pitts. You simply look at the proposed hotel in reference to its surroundings and on the merit of its own aesthetics – or lack of them.
Much like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said in reference to identifying and defining pornography, “I know it when I see it.” The Wingate waste of waterfront space is a whole lotta’ ugly as defined by the eye of the beholder. Period. And thank goodness we have at least 5 councilmembers who know it when they see it.
The question asked by Pitts is typical of a refusal to see the whole picture, something that we Buffalonians have learned to do in educating ourselves about integrated design. One can’t work their will upon an urban landscape in isolation, as if nothing else around it – past present or future – will ever matter.
