One of the coolest things about seeing the student village at Rock Harbor come together is the work that Atlas Steel plans on providing to the project. When the Planning Board asked the Rock Harbor team to replace a wooden fence (on Scajaquada Creek) shown on the drawings, Ed Hogle, owner of Atlas Steel decided to make a fence that best suits the village. Not only will the six-foot fence be made of steel, it will be designed with an artistic element in mind with music notes. When I first saw the fence on paper I thought about all of the fences around the city that could use the same type of stylized treatment.
Then, I thought back to Jeff Gabriel and his dream of teaching inner city kids a trade by offering a learn-work program (see post). Like the idea of artistic and functional bike-racks, we need to look at everyday elements in our city in different ways. At the turn of the century there was no holding back when it came to incorporating thoughtful design into developments. These days that same ethic does appear to apply. It’s good to see something with some creativity and thought being introduced into something as simple as a fence.
We should have some updates on the new Rock Harbor Village renderings (inspired by BRO viewers) soon.
