On May 31st, Main Street’s People’s Park will open for the ’08 season. This park (the vacant land next to the Tri-Main Center was donated by Tom Montante) is not just a park where lawn mowers show up and the gates open… People’s Park has become a destination of sorts for the surrounding community. That means that there are bigger plans that are needed, despite the park’s understated size. Back in ’06, BRO first covered the transformations from “…an empty lot of land next to the Tri-Main Building on Main Street… now filled with small trees, plants, and garden beds.” And that’s not it. This Saturday visitors will be treated to bubbles, kites, face painting, nature investigation, hot dogs (and hopefully something for the vegetarians), and a flower sale. Here is a blurb from a 2006 BRO post – of course this park continues to be a work in progress:
“The park features growing beds that community members can use to hone their gardening skills, and a 30-seat amphitheater that can be used for concerts, presentations, and eventually outdoor movie nights. Originally envisioned as a sort of community art space, the park features a sculpture from an artist in the Tri-Main Building. Developing plans for the park include installing a gazebo and chess tables, and having an indigenous plant investigation area for kids.” -Anna Miller
*People’s Park, the community gardens on Main Street between Jewett Avenue and Rodney Street, is reopening on Saturday, May 31 for the 2008 season. Please stop by with friends and family between 11:00AM – 2:00PM. People’s Park is the community spot to garden, gather and grow. – Park Organizers
