The series is named after the late Lilian Fairchild, who joined the Buffalo Museum of Science as its assistant librarian in 1928. Shortly thereafter, she created a travel talk series by describing her travels in England. Twenty-three travel talks were presented in the first year, drawing a total attendance of 4,385. These talks were further supported by the establishment of a travel information bureau in 1929, which lasted until 1948.
Fairchild retired in 1945 and continued her very popular lecture series until her death in 1948. It was at this time that the talks became known as the Lilian Fairchild Travel Talks, dedicated to the memory of a woman who had for years entranced audiences with her contagious love of travel.
