If Buffalo ever creates a new position for The Popes of South Buffalo, the men of Jackdaw will certainly be the first to be elected. And while we all know Buffalo has its abundance of summer festivals (like, you know, every weekend, if you want to get a final taste of “meat on a stick”, this is the place. Besides which, having followed Jackdaw ever since I’ve returned to Buffalo, there is NO other place to see them that is as massively and devotedly attended as the South Buffalo Irish Feis.
Last year, I was standing on stage working a video camera, and had to deal with the entire stage moving like the deck of a ship, with 3000 audience members pounding on it during the show. This year, a total of ten bands will play throughout the day, including local favorites Terry Sullivan and John Lombardo, as well as The McCabes (from NYC), the Fenians (from LA), Stone Row (former members of Kilbrannan), and Seanach , and irish dancing from the ever-amazing Rince Na Tiarna, as well as O’sullivan – Finn, Woodgate, and Rochez Academy. The festival starts at noon outside the Cazenovia Park Casino (Cazenovia St. and Abbott Rd. in South Buffalo – just minutes off the 90 or 190). Admission is totally FREE and and the event is open to all ages. With food, refreshments, entertainment and fireworks, this is a great event for the entire family. Photo by Kelly Gras.
