Where do you take a University at Buffalo (UB) student from China during her first week in town? To the Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival of course! I was recently offered the unique experience of hosting Shoxuan Feng from Beijing, China, in my home until December. The 22 year old college student has been studying in France for four years and decided to do an exchange between her French university and the University at Buffalo.
On Sunday, I decided to show our new international guest the B-lo in all its glory. Our first stop was to a cool studio on Main Street which afforded a great rooftop view of downtown. After a celebratory glass of red wine we were off to the National Buffalo Wing Festival. It was my first time attending this event, but definitely not my last. As we approached Dunn Tire Park we were pleasantly enveloped by a zesty aroma that had me salivating for the signature Buffalo dish.
Upon entering, we were overwhelmed by choice and not just wings. Turkey Hill Ice Cream was giving out free samples of Buffalo Stampede ice cream (a caramel concoction with lots of crunchy stuff), Snyderis Pretzels had Hot Buffalo Wing pieces ,which I am proudly addicted to, and Valintis Meats offered a chicken wing sausage which would be a great addition to any tail gate party. We gently steered our student chicken wing novice to the tent of Anchor Bar for her first wing sample. With fingers covered in sauce she exclaimed, i I like it a lot!!i As one well known commercial might say:
Price of admission to festival: $5
Sample of Anchor Bar Wings: $2
Seeing the face of a first time Chicken wing taster: Priceless
