A decent prime rib in Buffalo for $9.95? That’s what RoBear was eating the other day when I caught up with him over at North Restaurant on Thursday. His salad had just arrived (not included), which he was very excited about because the presentation was simple and the ingredients were as fresh as fresh gets. RoBear was eating at the bar; a set up that allows plenty of room for all of the necessary dishes, silverware and drinks. The bar is great, but so is the dining room… whichever you’re in the mood for I think that you’ll be very pleased.
Monday through Friday North offers one special meal and Thursdays happens to be the night that the prime rib is featured. When the meal arrived we were both surprised to see the size of the piece of meat. For just under ten bucks there was a meal fit for a king sitting on the bar. RoBear passed along that the cut was juicy and not too lean. The portion was obviously generous and the accompanying mashed potatoes were a welcome addition. Other specials that can be found at North are Kim’s Spaghetti & Ugly Meatballs (Mon), Calf’s Liver and Onions (Tues), Baby Back Ribs (Wed), and Beer Battered Fish Fri (Fri). I stopped in the other day for lunch and was quite happy with the offerings… I think I’ll have to go back and test out the spaghetti this Monday.
If nothing else, the atmosphere at North is worth the trip. The place reminds me of one of those old world haunts that my dad would have frequented when he was younger. As a matter of fact, it turns out that my day used to go there with his family and it was a very popular place to eat. I told him that the new menu was right up his ally with the calf’s liver and all… though he might have to sit a bit further away during that meal. All in all I think that North is going to be a hit in the city. There’s off street parking and a built in clientele above the joint. There’s even a lounge area along with a compact piano for anyone who likes to tickle the ivories.
North is located at the Lenox Hotel 140 North Street between Delaware and Elmwood.
