Black Rock and Riverside pulled off another wonderful garden walk this year. We have already been receiving emails telling us about the crowds of people, the gardens, and the overall pride that the walk instills upon these communities. Here is a quick overview of the event submitted by Richard Mack:
What does Nantucket punch, exploding wisteria pods, bubbling brooks, turtles and baby diapers have in common? They were all part of this past weekendis Garden Walk in Black Rock and Riverside, which featured 74 beautiful gardens.
I am not an avid gardener; my wife sports the green thumb in our family. With that, I chauffeured her to numerous gardens throughout the neighborhood on Saturday. I was impressed and learned more than I could have ever imagined.
I learned that behind every garden is a character; knowledgeable, caring and filled with pride. Did you know wisteria pods could explode with enough impact to break a window? That a buried diaper can help keep plants stay moist through a hot, dry summer? Did you know you donit even need land to plant a garden? A stair railing will do.
Entering the backyards of many of these homes was often like being transported to a different world. Fountains, ponds, fish, turtles, birds and statues of every type flourish amid the brightly colored gardens and occasional piped in music. Councilman Joe Golombek said of the Garden Walk, iitis like cancer in reverse.i I agree!
Unfortunately, I donit have the space to publish pictures of every garden, but many of them will soon be on the Internet at: www.brrgardenwalk.com.
A limited number of full color t-shirts ($10) and posters ($1) featuring this yearis design are available at the Riverside Review office, 215 Military Road. They are sure to be a keepsake.
