Folkloric Dance (www.folkloric.org), a new resident of the West Village on Johnson Park, will present their weekend dance lessons and demonstrations on the Johnson Park Green between the hours of 11:30 am and 1:30 pm this Saturday and Sunday, July 29 & 30. This event will provide insight into the cultural amenities available in our most historic neighborhood in Downtown Buffalo.
The West Village area, located along South Elmwood, extending to West Chippewa and Georgia, along Prospect to Carolina and up to Tracy Street is a designated historic location on the National Register. Extended borders to Niagara Street provide additional historic designation under the city and state preservation organizations. Most of the homes in this area were built prior to the Civil War and showcase various forms of architecture.
The Johnson Park Green, donated to the city in 1837 by Ebenzer Johnson, our first mayor, is Buffalo’s first park an is also featured on GardenWalk. Mayor Johnson created this park to assure an area for residents to enjoy as a public space for their families as well as an area for neighbors to meet and exchange ideas and plans for furthering the building of the City of Buffalo. This continues to present day due to the efforts of the Johnson Park Association and the West Village Renaissance Group. (www.westvillage-buffalo.com)
