It s Not You, It s Me. Hallwalls 2006 Members Exhibition| Opening Reception: Saturday, July 29, 8 11pm | WHO CAN SUBMIT WORK? The Members Exhibition is open to ALL current members of Hallwalls. You may begin or renew your membership here: http://www.hallwalls.org/member.html. Or in person at Hallwalls. Or you can join/renew when you drop off your work for the Members Exhibition. Current members of ROCO (Rochester Contemporary) are also welcome to submit work.
WHAT CAN I SUBMIT?
You may submit ONE work for inclusion in the exhibition.
IS THERE A SIZE RESTRICTION?
Strictly speaking, no. We do NOT want to discourage you from submitting a large piece, but let s be reasonable. If your work is larger than 4 feet square, please CONTACT US (john@hallwalls.org) before bringing it in.
ARE WE LIMITED BY MEDIA?
No. Paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, video, etc all are welcome. HOWEVER, 2-dimensional work must be READY TO HANG. No shoelaces taped to the back of your piece (you laugh, but it s happened…)
WHAT ABOUT VIDEO?
Video submissions (single channel only) are welcome, but we ask that you submit video work NO LATER THAN JULY 21. This enables us to properly prepare the submitted videos for the installation. While we would aspire to present each work on a separate monitor, we may need to compile them, depending on the number submitted. Dvd format preferred, ready to loop.
THE NUMBERS GAME
I ve noted this previously… Last members exhibition at the Tri-Main in 2004: 85 works in three galleries
Last year s show in the temporary space at 700 Main: 130 works in one gallery. This year? Show me the money, baby. 200 works? Wouldn t that be grand…
ABOUT THE TITLE/THEME
If you don t know the drill already, please note that the theme It s Not You, It s Me is OPTIONAL. But also know that, in the past, when the show has been reviewed in the Buffalo News, those that play to the theme tend to be the works that get covered. But you may choose to use this occasion to submit a recent work that has nothing to do with the theme. And that s fine too.
ABOUT THIS YEAR S THEME
This year s theme is a gentle prod toward the self-obsession lurking within all of you. Not that there s anything wrong with that. We concede the notion that a healthy, vibrant, ambitious ego is a key ingredient to propelling one s art star forward. It helps you make work, it helps you believe in your work. Even if your work is ostensibly not autobiographical, fess up, it s really all about you after all, isn t it? It s your version of the world thrust back at the world. Aren t we all part of a chorus, each of us chirping Me me me in our own inimitable way? Or, as Tristan Tzara once put it so beautifully, after all, everyone dances to his own personal boomboom…
