Buffalois rich legacy of great buildings is no secretoeven if we as a city sometimes seem to forget how lucky we are to possess such a tremendous assortment of historically significant (or just plain cool-looking) structures. Sure, most people know about Wright and Richardson and the mansions of Millionairesi Row. But the treasures of our area are far more extensive than just the most celebrated ones.
In the July/August 2006 special issue of Buffalo Spree, youill meet the architects and patrons behind the great nineteenth-century homes of North Street, learn about the science and art of neon, and get a sneak peek at some of the newest buildings currently popping up downtown. Over the course of a nearly 100-page special section, we offer our picks for the most endangered structures in WNY and show you how to build your own Wright house.
And we invite you to listen in as some of the areais most prominent architects weigh in on Buffalois past, present, and future. Speaking of movers and shakers, weive got thirteen well-known designers, preservationists, and architecture historians on the cover, standing in front of H. H. Richardsonis Buffalo State Hospital.
To launch the issue in grand style, weire throwing a party on Thursday, July 13 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Jacobs Executive Development Center (photo: formerly known as the Butler Mansion) at 672 Delaware Ave. Itis a chance to meet many of the architects, preservationists, and writers who contributed to the section, tour the mansion, view photographs of other historic Buffalo site, and talk to representatives of several WNY organizations committed to keeping Buffalois heritage intact. Enjoy hors dioeuvres and a cash bar, listen to musicians Don Metz and Michael Colquhoun performing the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim and others, bid on items in a silent auction, and compete in a trivia contest for valuable prizes.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier whose mission is to enhance appreciation of the built and natural landmarks in the region through tours, lectures, publications, advocacy, and special events.
