Last Christmas, a friend gave me a small sampling of bakery cookies. I devoured them all within 24 hours. I found out that they came from Ginois Bakery and ever since then, I wanted to stop in to check Ginois out for myself and, well, buy some more cookies! Now almost Valentineis Day, I finally had my chance the other day. Inside Ginois, I found a tantalizing array of cookies, breads, coffee cakes, and other pastries. Behind the display cabinets, the room is opened up so you see right into the bakeryis working space, which gives it a welcoming, homey feel. Ginois Italian Bakery has been around for over 25 years and the Angelo and Lina Vecchio have owned and operated the bakery since 1990. This is a true iMom and Popi business: the couple bakes everything themselves.
The Vecchio’s get up somewhere between 1:00 and 3:00 in the morning, depending on the day, and begin baking their goods with care and attention, filling special orders as well as preparing pastries that are part of their daily selection. They tell me some of their more popular items are their canolis, almond rings, chocolate chip coffee cakes, and of course their cookies. When I stopped in, they had well over a dozen different types of cookies to choose from, and I have to say, Iim especially fond of their fig cookies. Additionally, in honor of Valentineis Day, Ginois is baking up some special heart-shaped cookies n the red frosted ones in the pic are vanilla flavored, and the chocolate ones . . . you guessed it, theyire chocolate!
Ginois Italian Bakery can be found at 1368 Hertel Avenue at the corner of Saranac. The Vecchiois are open for business Tuesday n Saturday 8am-5pm, and Sunday 8am-1pm.
