We wondered, ever worried about what would fill the niche left when Pier 1 was closed after more than a decade of operation on Elmwood. We hoped it would be an opportunity for something more contemporary and relevant, a little more chic without being too upscale to take itis place. We daydreamed, iWouldnit it be great if we had the same choices in furnishings as the ones offered in specialty stores like ABC Carpet & Home, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, and Crate & Barrel?i
We hear today that our hopes have been answered.
Dave Brugh and Michael Poczkalski, the proprietors of Room, who converted a former gift shop into a designer showroom that brings a little bit of Soho/Newberry Street to Elmwood Avenue, are moving to a much larger space.
Why? Because they are about to begin carrying the elegant yet affordable furniture of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams –merchandise that according to Time, imakes deracinated col-lege students feel as if they’re at home, ur-ban hipsters feel as if they’re in the country and suburban yuppies in ranch houses feel like aristocrats, all for a reasonable price.i The industry-leading furniture designers/manufacturers in addition to producing their own line also make furniture found in Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn.
Roomis new space is approximately 2200 sq. ft. and is at 986 Elmwood Avenue, the former Elmwood Market and Deli at the corner of Potomac. The new location will realize some retail synergy with Elmwood Village Fabrics and Homeward Bound, serving to create the cityis Home Decorridor.
